Origin of ayurveda

Ayurveda comes from a Sanskrit term where “Ayur” means “Life” and “Veda” means “To Know” which in together means “The Science of Life” and is said to be “Mother of All Healing” and is an eternal science which first existed in the universal conscious (Brahma) before it was even passed from the creator to the ancient Indian mystics through meditation.

In Indian mythology, Ayurveda is considered to be the upaveda to the Atharva Veda and the classic ayurvedic text that parallels Atharva Veda is the Charaka  Samhita which is a treatise on general meditation. Ayurvedic medicine is based on the idea that the world is made up of five elements- Aakash (Space), Jala (Water), Prithvi (Earth), Teja (Fire), and Vayu (Air) and the effect of these 5 elements on the human body is extreme and can give you long time relief. From 6th century BC to 7th century AD, a systematic system was laid down as the development of science grew in an organized manner. This period was coined as Samhita Period. During this period a number of classical works were produced by different authors and during this period, there was an organized medical care for which evidences are available. The theory of ayurveda believes that all the areas of life in some way or the other impact the health of the individual. That is why the Vedas cover a wide variety of topics that include health and healthcare techniques, art, human behavior, spirituality, astrology etc. The medical books of ayurveda were available by the 8th century BCE which provided the procedural instructions and a history of how ayurvedic medicine evolved over time.

About ayurveda and its benefits

Ayurveda, also popularly known as “Alternative medicines” for a reason as it in general does not only focus on the healing of the person’s diseases but also focuses on a healthy lifestyle of a man. It fights the infections present in our body from its roots without giving any physical or internal harm to it. It harmonizes the mind, body and spirit and concentrates on the wellness of health. While it’s not only about the medication, Ayurveda also concentrates on meditation, yoga and massage for a relaxed and a stress free life that we live today.

For people who believe in Ayurveda, also know that according to Ayurveda, the physical form of human body is composed of three fundamental categories namely Doshas, Dhatus and Malas where doshas and malas are three in number and dhatus are seven in number. The three doshas (tridoshas) are Vata, Kapha and Pitta. Vata is the subtle energy of movement; Pitta is the energy of digestion or metabolism and Kapha, the energy of lubrication and the energy that forms the body’s structure. According to the studies of Ayurveda, it is found that Ayurveda works on body, mind and consciousness all together in order to maintain the proper balance of the body and to learn about the balance; one must know how Vata, Pitta and Kapha work. Although everyone has these qualities within them, it usually that one is primary, the other is secondary and the third is usually the least prominent.

Why to choose ayurvedic treatment?

Talking about its advantages, here is what Ayurveda has to offer to the young minds, stressed youth and the elderly suffering from diseases

Growing popularity of ayurveda in western countries

There is no doubt that the countries outside India have a better system and better medical facilities than India has. But it should also be noticed that people living today have unhealthy diet routines and are prone to diseases frequently and hence their immunity system isn’t really strong. Be it in India or the western countries. The drugs or chemical medicines we today procure do provide us instant relief but don’t go deep to the roots of the disease. They work on the above layer and cure the disease. Here lies the difference! Ayurveda goes deep inside the water and finds the root cause, or better say that it works not only on the upper layer but also inside. There is an urgent need for a medical practice that heals the body and keeps the other body parts undisturbed and also aims at bettering human lifestyle, soothes the mind, calms the soul and improves the immunity of the body. For this reason, the western countries are seeking the Ayurvedic ailment because it does not only treat the disease but helps in maintaining the natural balance of the body, the urgent need of the hour!

The basic reason for its popularity in the western states lays behind its approach i.e., it believes in the holistic healing and development of the body unlike other form of medicinal practices which limited only to the disease or the diseased part only. Because of the popularity in the Ayurveda, the demand for Ayurvedic herbal products has grown by 8%. Today the world is dealing with so many diseases which even though have medical cures, but leave behinds such effects that it disturbs the internal metabolism level.

For the imbalance caused due to the chemical or allopathic medicines or the western medicines, even though Ayurveda is based in India, it is spreading its wings across the globe. Ayurveda is just one solution one can adopt for the betterment of their body, mind and soul. The major reason why people are adopting it is that it does not leave behind any side effect.

An interesting knowledge about the haldi (turmeric) battle (not literally)

In India, turmeric has been used since centuries as a medicinal herb for healing the cuts, wounds or deep bruises. It was in 1999, when it became the subject of the battle. It was about its patent right between UDA and India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research argued that turmeric was used for thousands of years, and its healing abilities were not a discovery or invention but our ancient books of Sanskrit related to the traditional knowledge and other texts in which the record of these herbs were kept helped us win the battle. After all, it was India and about the herbal knowledge, We obviously had to win!
